The Details

Will Rogers Turnpike

The Will Rogers Turnpike is one of Oklahoma’s freeway-standard toll roads. It’s situated in the northeast section of the state. It starts in Tulsa as a continuation of the Creek Turnpike. Then, it goes north from the Interstate 44 / US-412 interchange. The Will Rogers Turnpike ends in Joplin, Missouri.

The Will Rogers Turnpike – overview

The Will Rogers Turnpike is a toll road named for Will Rogers – ‘Oklahoma’s Favorite Son’. It is 88.5 miles (142.4 km) long and carries the Interstate 44 designation for the entire length. The toll road was opened to traffic in 1957 and designated one year later. It runs from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Missouri state. The posted speed on the Will Rogers Turnpike is 75 mph – higher than on most US toll roads. The Will Rogers Turnpike has one unique feature. There is a McDonald’s sitting over the turnpike. Formerly, it was called the ‘Glass House’. While inside, one can see the traffic passing beneath. This McDonald’s is one of the world’s largest.

The Will Rogers Turnpike tolls

If you want to drive the full length of the Will Rogers Turnpike, you will have to pay $5.00, assuming that you’re driving a two-axle vehicle. If you have Pikepass, you will pay a discounted rate of $4.50. The toll road differs from most toll roads in the US. Its tolling system may seem a bit unusual at first sight. It’s because the Will Rogers Turnpike only has one barrier toll plaza at which drivers pay the full toll and receive a receipt. Such a system was implemented in 1992. The barrier toll plaza is located southwest of Vinita. If you decide to exit before reaching the plaza (or if you enter at an interchange past the plaza) you will pay the toll for the portion traveled at the interchange. If you want to leave after you pass the plaza, you will pay the full toll at the barrier plaza and you need to present the receipt at the ramp for a refund of the untraveled section. If you enter the toll road before the plaza, you will receive a ticket at the ramp and you should present it at the barrier plaza. The fare for the untraveled section will be then deducted from the full toll amount.

The Will Rogers Turnpike accepts both tag transponder payments and cash payments. If you don’t have a valid payment option, you will receive a mailed bill. Online payments via mobile applications like Uproad aren’t available.
