West Virginia Turnpike – overview
West Virginia Turnpike provides the most direct route south of the Great Lakes and regions of Canada. While driving, you have a chance to see the beautiful views from Flat Top Mountain, the Bluestone Gorge. The road was opened in 1954. It has 116 bridges and that means more than one every mile. It climbs from Charleston (600 feet) to Flat Top Mountain (3,400 feet). Historically, it was a two-lane road with curves and a tunnel. In 1987, the entire length of the West Virginia Turnpike was upgraded to interstate standards. There are three mainline toll plazas on the turnpike. They are located in Chelyan, Ghent, and Pax. Additionally, there is one side toll located on Route 19 at Exit 48 (the North Beckley Exit).
