The Details

Veterans Expressway

Veterans Expressway is located in Tampa, Florida. It was fully opened to public traffic in 2018. The project has been converted from an Express Lane to a Thru Lane. It has one managed lane in each direction for 9 miles, spanning from Memorial Highway to the north of Hutchinson Road.

Veterans Expressway – overview

Veterans Expressway’s official name is State Road 589 (SR 589). It is also called Suncoast Parkway. It is a north-south toll road right next to Florida Gulf Coast. It is 68 miles (109 km) long, extending from State Road 60 in Tampa, north to SR 44 near Lecanto. Veterans Expressway is operated and maintained by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise. The route was constructed to help the increasing commuter traffic in the Tampa-St. Petersburg metropolitan area. The Suncoast Parkway was opened in 2001 as a way to extend the expressway. In 2022, the section between US 98 and Florida State Road 44 was opened. Veterans Expressway has been eventually expanded to six general-purpose lanes with 2 Express Toll lanes.

Below you will find Veterans Expressway entrances and exits:

  • Northbound: you may enter north of West Hillsborough Avenue and North of Wilsky Boulevard. You may exit North of Wilsky Boulevard and North of Hutchison Road.

  • Southbound: you may enter South of Van Dyke Road / Suncoast Parkway and South of Gunn Highway. You may exit South of Gunn Highway and South of Memorial Highway.

On the Veterans Expressway, only 2-axle vehicles are permitted. Trucks with three or more axles aren’t permitted (transit buses, vanpools, and school buses are allowed). Drivers pay only the general toll amount. It’s charged for all other lanes on the same toll road. The Veterans Expressway (same as Suncoast Parkways) uses all-electronic toll collection.

Veterans Expressway – cost and payments

Veterans Expressway doesn’t accept cash. Cash payments stopped in June 2014. It’s now an all-electronic toll road. The table below shows toll rates that apply for drivers who decide to go along the Suncoast Parkway toll facility (both those who use Sunpass and those who use the Pay by Plate payment option). To calculate the toll for a specific toll road, use an online toll calculator.

Veterans Expressway offers multiple ways to pay tolls. The only one that is unavailable is the cash payment option. On the opposite, you can use one of the transponder tags or the Pay by Plate option. You can also use the mobile app to manage and pay your tolls online. One such an application is Uproad.

To calculate the toll for a specific trip, use the toll calculator. If you don’t pay a toll while driving on the Veterans Expressway, you will be mailed a bill. Such a toll rate is the most expensive option as additional fees may apply.

Here on Uproad.com, you'll find the most up-to-date Veterans Expressway toll information. From Veterans Expressway toll prices to payment options, Uproad lets you know the rules of the road.

Better than a toll tag, I use one app on both vehicles and will link my wife's car next week. Easy to travel to other states, since you're registered with all toll authorities they cover.
