Map of Turner Turnpike

The Details

The Turner Turnpike toll road is located in the heart of Oklahoma City and connects Oklahoma City, the state capital, to the largest city of Tulsa. This highway is one of the oldest in the state and was opened in 1953 after 6 years of construction. The road was named after Roy Turner, the governor of the state, who initiated its construction.

Features of the Turner Turnpike Toll Road

The beginning of the highway is north of Oklahoma City. The total length is 86 miles and ends in southwest Tulsa. Several features of the facility can be distinguished:

  • The maximum allowed speed is 80 miles per hour, so the optimum travel time from the starting point to the endpoint is 90 minutes;
  • In addition to the starting and ending points, interchanges are also present at Stroud, Wellston, Bristow, and Chandler;
  • The highway has a well-developed infrastructure, including a full-service gas station, fast-food establishments, and a shopping plaza that will open in 2020.

In 2021, the Turner Turnpike expansion and reconstruction project was proposed and successfully implemented in practice. In doing so, some data were partially changed to improve navigational performance (routers, online maps, etc.).

Peculiarities of toll collection

The fare per vehicle from the starting point to the end is $5. Even though this fare is one of the most affordable in the country (adjusted for inflation), the road will still remain toll-free, as all the funds received are used for other road projects.

Note that the Turner Highway uses a very unusual payment system, which is governed by the following rules:

  • full fare with a receipt only at the point located near Stroud;
  • If the driver needs to exit before the finish point, you need to show the receipt at one of the branches, and then get a refund of part of the cost;
  • If the start of the route began in the eastern or western direction, or at one of the final locations, a partial refund is not made;
  • if the car moves towards the toll booth, at the junction the appropriate ticket is issued, which after reaching the desired point is paid.

The system was introduced in 1992 and was actively used until recently. Now the system is being reorganized to introduce convenient cashless fare payment.

Better than a toll tag, I use one app on both vehicles and will link my wife's car next week. Easy to travel to other states, since you're registered with all toll authorities they cover.
