The Details

Located in New York City, NY, the Tappan Zee Bridge is a major bridge facility. The Tappan Zee Bridge is one of the busiest bridges in New York.

The Tappan Zee Bridge spans across the Hudson River. It is located in New York City. The bridge is also called the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and it’s one of the busiest bridges in New York. Is it a toll facility? If so, how much does it cost to cross it? Let’s explain!

The Tappan Zee Bridge – details

The Tappan Zee Bridge is a twin cable-stayed bridge between Nyack and Tarrytown in New York. The facility replaced the previous (original) Tappan Zee Bridge located just to the south – a new bridge was opened in 2018. The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge’s north span carries westbound and northbound traffic of the NY State Thruway, Interstate 87, and Interstate 287. The New York State Thruway Authority administers it and the co-sponsor is the state Department of Transportation. The total length of the bridge is approximately 5 km. The main span of both decks is 370 m. It’s approached on either side by 157-m-long side spans. The Tappan Zee Bridge is now one of the widest cable-stayed bridges in the entire world. In 2020, a bicycle and pedestrian path with six amazing overlooks (known as ‘belvederes’) was opened to connect the towns of Tarrytown and South Nyack.

The Tappan Zee Bridge tolls

Tolls are collected in the southbound and eastbound directions only. Right now, it costs E-ZPass holders $5.75 to get across the Cuomo Bridge. By the year 2027, the toll will probably increase to $7.75 (this has been discussed by the state authorities since December 2022). Anyone with an E-ZPass from another state pays an extra 15%. Pay-by-mail option costs an extra 30%.

Tolls are variable based on the NY State Thruway’s vehicle classification system and the time of day. On Saturdays and Sundays, there is a flat rate.

Payment options

Tolls on the Tappan Zee Bridge depend on the time of the day and the vehicle’s classification. They are collected using a cashless toll system. The easiest way to pay for tolls on the Tappan Zee Bridge is to use the app called Uproad. It’s a mobile application that enables users to seamlessly pay their toll with just a few clicks, in seconds.

E-ZPass users pay the lowest rate possible, the rate normally charged from midnight to 6:14 am. Other users have to pay the highest rate possible, the rate normally charged from 7:00 am to 8:59 am. If you have a class 2L vehicle and it is shorter than 2.3 m (height) and has 2 axles, you will pay a flat fee of $6.83 (if you are a NY-issued E-ZPass user) or $6.04 (if you have an out-of-state E-ZPass.

Additional information

Originally, the bridge is named for a native American tribe. Their name was ‘Tappan’. The second word, ‘Zee’ is the Dutch word for ‘sea’.

The Tappan Zee Bridge provides eight general traffic lanes. There are also dedicated bus lanes and shoulders for emergency access. It had a crash rate of 63.54 in 2021 which, compared to the Thruway’s rate (98.11), looks safer. One person was killed in an accident on the bride in 2016. Since then, there have been reported bridge-crash fatalities on a new bridge.
