The Details

125 Toll Road

125 Toll Road is a freeway located in the San Diego area. It is a first-class express toll road that spans along the current State Route 125 highway, through eastern Chula Vista, to Otay Mesa near the International Border. It provides convenient access to Downtown Sorrento Valley.

125 Toll Road – overview

125 Toll Road (State Route 125) is an American highway located in California. It serves as a north-south freeway near San Diego. The first section of State Route 125 was added to the state highway system in 1933. In the early 2000s, the highway was extended north to State Route 52 and south to State Route 54. The southern section of the route is called the South Bay Expressway. It’s a toll facility near Chula Vista that opened in 2007. It’s now considered the beginning of State Route 125, starting at an interchange with State Route 11 and State Route 905. The South Bay Expressway is also called SBX and it’s a 9.2-mile, privately developed extension of 125 Toll Road.

125 Toll Road is part of the California Freeway and Expressway System. It is also part of the National Highway System that gathers highways that are crucial for the US defense, mobility, and economy. It carries annual traffic of over 190,000 vehicles between State Route 94 and Lemon Avenue.

125 Toll Road – cost and payment options

Toll rates along 125 Toll Road depend on the number of axles the vehicle has and on whether a driver uses the FasTrak electronic toll collection system or pays by credit card or cash. If you have a FasTrak tag you pass under open road tolling gantries at each entrance and exit. You pay a prorated toll based on the distance you traveled. If you pay tolls with a credit card or cash, you will be charged a higher rate depending on which toll booth you pass through, using a barrier toll system. Tolls are located at northbound and southbound off-ramps, as well as at the mainline Otay Mesa. In the table below, you will find toll rates that apply for vehicles traveling the full length of the South Bay Express. To make sure you calculate the cost properly, you can also use an online toll rate calculator.

There are many payment methods to choose from while driving along 125 Toll Road. If you don’t have a transponder tag, you can pay with cash or with a credit card. License plate tolls are also allowed on this toll road. For online payments, you can try out the Uproad application – a mobile app that allows you to manage all toll payments directly on your smartphone and make payments in just a few clicks. If you are traveling without a valid payment option, you will be mailed a bill or violation and pay the highest toll rate.

An interesting fact about 125 Toll Road

The San Diego Association of Governments is planning to give up on tolls on the South Bay Expressway until 2027. If this reduces congestion on Interstates 5 and 805, drivers will not have to avoid the 10-mile road running the eastern portion of the city anymore. The officials say that eliminating the tolls could help economic development in San Diego County’s second-largest city – Chula Vista.
