The Details
Located in San Francisco Bay Area California, the San Mateo Hayward Bridge is a major bridge facility. The San Mateo Hayward Bridge is one of the busiest in California.
San Mateo-Hayward Bridge connects two cities – Foster City and Hayward. It carries the San Francisco Bay along State Route 92. The bridge significantly improved commutes on SR-92 between San Mateo and Alameda counties, especially during peak evening hours. Tolls on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge are paid in the westbound direction on the eastern side of the facility.
San Mateo-Hayward Bridge – overview
San Mateo Bridge (or, officially the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge) is the longest bridge in the San Francisco Bay and the longest bridge in all of California. It is 7 miles (11.3 km) long. This is made up of a western highrise section (1.9 miles or 3.1 km) and an eastern trestle section (5.1 miles or 8.2 km). The bridge now has six lanes and is part of State Route 92. It links the city of Hayward in the East Bay to Foster City on the San Francisco Peninsula. The San Mateo Bridge is owned by the state of California and maintained by the California Department of Transportation. It carries over 90 thousand cars and other vehicles on a typical day.
The bridge was opened for traffic in 1967 to serve residents and tourists who want to enjoy traveling across the great San Francisco Bay area. The span of the facility won two prizes a year later: an ASCE Award for Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement and an American Institute of Steel Construction long-span prize bridge award. The bridge was widened in 2003 – the project was funded as part of the Bay Area Transit Authority’s Regional Measure 1 program. The aim was to match the configuration of the high-rise portion of the bridge and the facility was widened from four to six lanes.

San Mateo-Hayward Bridge tolls – payment methods
The following payment methods are available at San Mateo-Hayward Bridge toll facility:
FasTrak toll tag. Each time you cross a toll facility, a certain amount is deducted from your prepaid FasTrak account. Money can be added to your account automatically with a credit card, cash, a check, or a money order. A toll tag is necessary to receive discounted tolls.
License plate. A License Plate Account enables you to pay tolls at all Bay Area toll bridges. It’s a great solution for drivers who travel regularly but don’t want a prepaid toll tag. A License Plate Account uses your plate number to identify the vehicle and matches it to your account. There isn’t a prepaid balance required.
One-time payment made online, over the phone, or in person within 48 hours after crossing the bridge. If you’re visiting or only in the area for a short time, this option may be the best for you.
Toll invoice – an invoice is sent to the vehicle’s registered owner. If they pay within 21 days, no extra fee is added to the toll invoice.
