The Details

Newport Bridge is a major bridge in the state of Rhode Island. It is located in Newport, RI, as part of Rhode Island Route 138. It’s the best way to get from the Rhode Island mainland through both Aquidneck Island and Conanicut Island without having to circle around Rhode Island through Providence.

Newport Bridge – description

Newport Bridge, officially the Claiborne Pell Bridge (named for longtime RI US. Senator Claiborne Pell who lived in Newport), connects Newport on Aguidneck Island and Jamestown on Conanicut Island. It is a suspension bridge and the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority operates it. You can access the bridge from Newport by:

  • Heading north on Route 238.

  • Heading west on Route 138.

  • Heading east on Route 138.

  • Heading north from Jamestown on Conanicut Avenue.

The Claiborne Pell Bridge is the 87th longest suspension bridge in the world and the longest suspension bridge in New England. Its main span is 488 meters (1,601 feet) and the overall length is 3,428 meters (11,247 feet). It has four lanes, two in each direction. The main towers of Newport Bridge reach 122 meters (400 feet) above the water’s surface. Newport Bridge is the only toll facility in the state of Rhode Island.

Newport Bridge tolls

The toll cost for cars going through Newport Bridge is $4.00 for cars with non-resident E-ZPass. Additionally, you must pay $2.00 per extra axle. For cars without E-ZPass, the toll is $6.00. If you have an E-ZPass for Rhode Island residents (it’s a transponder that you can put in your vehicle just like a regular E-ZPass tag), you are entitled to a discount. Discount plans apply to 2-axle vehicles, assuming that the vehicle owner uses a RITBA-issued E-ZPass. On top of that, the vehicle must be less than 7,000 lbs gross vehicle weight. The discounted toll on the Newport Bridge is $0.83 and there are unlimited travel plans and 30-day frequent user plans. When it comes to trucks, they pay tolls based on the number of axles. Bicycles are not permitted on the Claiborne Pell Bridge. However, on weekdays and Saturdays, there is Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus #64, which is equipped with bike racks.

Payment options

Rhode Island tolls can be paid with cash, via E-ZPass Rhode Island, a regular E-ZPass, and NationalPass. There is no Pay-by-plate, the video toll system on Newport Bridge. You can also pay for the bridge through the mobile app Uproad, which allows you to manage toll road payments across the United States.

If you don’t have cash or any pass that would enable you to pay the toll, you can still fill out a form on the spot to cross the bridge. Then, you have to pay a missed toll online, in cash (in person), or by mailing a check payable to RITBA. You have 14 days to pay without an additional fee. After 14 days, an additional $40.00 fee is added. On day 46, it’s a $35.00 extra fee, and if the missed toll isn’t still paid, the unpaid toll invoice can become a matter of the courts.

The bridge is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You have to pay at all times. The toll doesn’t vary based on traffic volume or peak hours.

Additional information

Before the Newport Bridge was built, the area it serves had been previously only accessible by ferry ride. When the bridge was opened, it led to more tourism opportunities in the city. Today, Newport Bridge is the pathway to one of America’s most historic cities. The bridge is an iconic landmark, and its engineers won many awards for its design.
