I-95 Express Lanes
If you’re looking for a way to make your trip to Northern Virginia smoother and more predictable, the Express Lanes are your way to go. You can use them to bypass congestion on the Beltway and 95 and 395 corridors. The 95 Express Lanes run 31 miles from Stafford to Fairfax. The 395 Express Lanes are 8 miles long and they take drivers right up to the D.C. line. Both are cashless. They use electronic payments.
I-95 Express Lanes – overview
I-95 Express Lanes are located in Northern Virginia. They extend nearly 31 miles from its southern and at Route 610 in Stafford County north to Edsall Rd. in Alexandria, Fairfax County where they continue onto Interstate 395. They connect to 495 Express Lanes and 395 Express Lanes. Altogether they create a network of toll-managed lanes in Northern Virginia. I-95 Lanes have the Fredericksburg Extension. It added three lanes for approximately 1.5 miles. There are also new access points including flyover ramps at the Route 17 terminus and Quantico area. The entire project has been part of the Atlantic Gateway initiative, a multimodal suite of projects focused on the I-95 Express Lanes.
Express Lanes can be operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The regular speed is 65 miles per hour. Both E-95 and E-395 follow an approximate reversal schedule (as they are reversible, the northbound and southbound directions have to follow an approximate schedule). Simply speaking, they point north in the morning and then point south in the evening.
I-95 Express Lanes – cost and how to pay?
The Express Lanes stretch over 30 miles, from Edsall Road exit to Garrisonville Road in Stafford County. To use the lanes and pay, you need a transponder tag mounted on your windshield. There are no manned toll booths along the road. You cannot pay with cash and all charges are done with detection devices. Tolls cost between 20 and 80 cents a mile, depending on how heavy the traffic is. The highest rate applies during peak hours. If you’re driving a carpool of three or more, you can use the lanes for free. Note that you have to use a special E-ZPass Flex device. If you’re wondering what the total cost of your travel will be, use the online calculator.
Additional payment information
If you don’t have a transponder tag, you can make a payment for an invoice. The invoice will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. You can also pay online without an invoice within five days of your trip. The total amount of your unpaid tolls should be available within 48 hours. If you are an E-ZPass user and you miss a toll or an invoice, you can qualify for the First-Time Forgiveness program.
If you have missed a toll recently, visit the Express Lanes website and enter your trip information. You will be charged the $1.50 fee. You can easily schedule an automatic online payment once your trip is processed. When it is, you will receive an email notification.
