The Details
Hugh L Carey Tunnel is situated in New York City, NY. It was opened in 1950 to connect Southwestern Brooklyn with the Wall St. area of Manhattan. Hugh L Carey Tunnel – description
Hugh L Carey Tunnel (the official name) is very often called the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel or just Battery Tunnel or Battery Park Tunnel. The battery in the name refers to an artillery battery located at that site during New York City’s earliest days. Hugh L Carey Tunnel is a tolled tunnel in New York, connecting the Battery in Manhattan with Red Hook in Brooklyn. Since the tunnel was opened in 1950, it has been the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in North America. The construction began in 1940. The New York City Tunnel Authority built it with some assistance from Triborough Bridge Authority. Now, MTA Bridges and Tunnels operate Hugh L Carey Tunnel. It is 2,779 meters long (9,117 feet).
The tunnel is part of the Interstate Highway System. It carries the entirety of the unsigned Interstate 478. It has two twin tubes. Each tube has two lanes under the East River. The Battery Tunnel connects two totally different boroughs – the community of South Brooklyn, the Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Columbia Terrace, and Cobble Hill on the Brooklyn side and The South Street Seaport, Battery Park City, World Trade Center, the Wall Street area, and the World Financial Center on the Manhattan side.

Payment options
Until 2017, tolls were collected at a toll booth on the Brooklyn side. In 2017, the booth was replaced with electronic gantries on the Manhattan side. Drivers were no longer allowed to pay cash at the Battery Tunnel. Since then, as for most tolled facilities in the US, cameras and E-ZPass readers are installed on overhead gantries. If your vehicle doesn’t have an E-ZPass, a picture of its license plate is taken. Then, the bill for the toll is mailed to the owner of the vehicle. If a vehicle has an E-ZPass, sensors wirelessly detect the transponder tag. Tolls at the Battery Tunnel are consistent. They don’t vary depending on traffic volume or peak hours. To make your toll payments even easier, you can install a handy mobile app – Uproad. It enables you to pay your toll bills seamlessly, in minutes.

This App allows us worry-free travel on TOLL ROADS...Automatically replenishing our account, notifying us of Automatically paying our access to the Toll Road. Great relief from expensive citations for not paying while driving. Thank you. P.S. A receipt is always sent to us.

Better than a toll tag, I use one app on both vehicles and will link my wife's car next week. Easy to travel to other states, since you're registered with all toll authorities they cover.
Been going back to the office a little so been driving more. This is great.
