Chesapeake Bay Bridge – description

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge or officially the Lucius J. Kellam Jr. Bridge Tunnel is both a tourist attraction and a travel convenience. The bridge tunnel connects Southern Virginia and the Delmarva Peninsula. It’s a 95-mile shortcut for travelers between the north of Wilmington, Delaware, and Virginia Beach. Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is a 17.6-mile (28.3 km) toll facility and at the same time, an award-winning engineering marvel. The bridge replaced ferries in 1964 but it was entirely completed in 1999. It is now one of fourteen bridge tunnel systems in the world. It carries US 13.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is operated by Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District. Direct crossing time is around 25 minutes. There is bus parking available, as well as a vending area and restrooms. Currently, a parallel tunnel at Thimble Shoal Channel is in progress.

E-ZPass customers can benefit from toll discounts. Note that toll pricing isn’t consistent. It is highly dependable on the day. Peak season pricing starts every Friday at midnight, through Sunday at 11:59 pm. Off-peak season is all other times.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel accepts cash, credit/debit cards, and E-ZPass. All discounts require the use of E-ZPass. The maximum vehicle height is 13’-6’. If you are traveling by a recreational vehicle, you must turn off all propane at the outside valve before you cross the bridge.
