The Details
SR-73 Catalina View
SR-73 Catalina View is located in Orange County, California. It connects Interstate 405 in Costa Mesa to Interstate 5 in San Juan Capistrano. It is owned and maintained by the Transportation Corridor Agency. The route only supports FasTrak when it comes to tolling transponder tags.
SR-73 Catalina View – overview
State Route 73 is a 17.76 miles (28.58 km) state highway situated in Orange County. Almost 20 km (over 10 miles) of the highway is a toll road opened in 1996. It’s part of the California Freeway and Expressway System and part of the National Highway System. The terminuses:
Northern: at Interstate 405 in Costa Mesa.
Southern: at Interstate 5 in San Juan Capistrano, near the Mission Viejo border at the interchange with Interstate 5.
State Road 73 is almost a parallel path between the Pacific Coast Highway and Interstate 405. It passes Laguna Niguel. Then the tolled section starts at the Greenfield Drive Exit. The route also passes Greenfield Drive, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Beach, and Crystal Cove State Park. In the Crystal Cove State Park area, many toll plazas are situated. The toll section ends near MacArthur Boulevard. Then, the freeway continues into Newport Beach, passes the southern boundary of the state, and finally enters Costa Mesa.
An interesting fact about the SR-73: the design and construction of the highway cost a total of $800 million.
SR-73 Catalina View tolls
On State Route 73 there is a barrier toll system. Drivers pay flat-rate tolls based on the booth they pass through. The route supports an all-electronic tolling and open-road tolling system. Since 2019, license plate tolling hasn’t been supported. While driving on the SR-73 Catalina View, you can pay using the FastTrak electronic toll collection system. You can also make a one-time online payment. Tolls must be paid within 5 days after the trip on the toll road. Otherwise, the driver will be assessed a toll violation. In order to avoid it, you should follow the instructions on the invoice and pay the toll either online or offline.
Tolls are set based on a congestion pricing scheme (for FasTrak users). Non-FasTrak users have to pay the maximum toll of $9.00 regardless of the day and time. Tolls are collected at both southbound entrances and northbound exits (La Paz Road, Aliso Creek Road, State Route 133), as well as southbound exits and northbound entrances (Newport Coast Drive, Bonita Canyon Drive).
How does FasTrak work?
FasTrak works similar to other toll transponder systems, such as E-ZPass. The E-ZPass isn’t valid in California. The tag should be installed on your windshield and the tolls are deducted from your linked bank account every time you cross the toll road, a toll bridge, or a high-occupancy toll lane. If you want to properly calculate how much you will pay for crossing a certain toll facility, use the online toll calculator that will help you estimate the total cost of your trip. Note that it’s impossible to use the Uproad application on State Route 73 Catalina View. You can only pay using the transponder tag or make an online payment.
